Bladder Stones

What is Bladder Stones?

A bladder stone is a hard mineral deposit that forms in the bladder or arrives from the kidney or ureter and remains there. Symptoms may include frequent urination, pain on voiding, intermittent stream, lower abdominal pain, blood in the urine and recurrent UTIs; some stones are found without symptoms. Diagnosis usually uses ultrasound and, when needed, CT or cystoscopy. Stones are most often broken and removed by endoscopic cystolithotripsy. To reduce recurrence, underlying causes that leave residual urine—such as prostate enlargement, urethral stricture or voiding dysfunction—should also be assessed and treated.
