Kidney Cancer

What is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer is a malignant uncontrolled growth of kidney cells. The most common type is renal cell carcinoma. A kidney tumour may cause no early symptoms and can be found incidentally on ultrasound, CT or MRI. Blood in the urine, abdominal or flank pain may also occur. Surgery is among the most effective options for localised disease. In early stages the aim is to treat the cancer while preserving healthy kidney tissue when possible. Depending on tumour size and location, active surveillance, partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy or ablation may be considered. Surgery can be performed robotically, laparoscopically or open.
